Honda’s automobile manufacturing and sales joint venture in Indonesia, Honda Prospect Motor (HPM) announced its plans to develop a new MPV based on the Brio hatchback platform in Indonesia during the ground breaking ceremony of a new plant in Jakarta.
The Brio hatchback based MPV is scheduled for launch in 2014 and is believed to be similar to the Concept S in terms of looks that was showcased at the Beijing Motor Show. The Concept S that was showcased in the Beijing Motor Show is an MPV that will be designed for the Chinese market and the company says a production version will be launched next year in China, followed by a global release.
The Brio based MPV will come with both petrol and diesel versions keeping in mind the versatility of customers in India and the new MPV is expected to get an updated version of the Honda City’s current 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine. Though the shift in demand will be for the diesel version, is expected to be powered by an all-new motor (1.4 or 1.6 litres) that Honda is currently developing.
However, the Brio hatchback based MPV will obviously be smaller and will be positioned below the production version of the Concept S. Honda recently revealed that an MPV based on the next generation Jazz is slated to launch next year in competition to the Ertiga has again announced an MPV based on the Brio platform.
