Mercedes-Benz has officially announced the first AMG variant of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class in with the GL63 AMG, the second SUV in Mercedes range to get the AMG treatment after Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG that will compete with the BMW X5M, Range Rover Supercharged and the Toyota Land Cruiser.
The GL63 AMG is powered by AMG 5.5 liter V8 bi-turbo engine that produces a peak output of 557hp and maximum torque of 760Nm. This engine does a 0 to 100km/h sprint of 4.9 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. The GL63 AMG is believed to deliver a fuel efficiency figure of 12.3 liters per 100 kilometers (288g CO2/km).
The engine features a high-tech power package including spray-guided direct petrol injection, piezo injectors, bi-turbo charging, air/water intercooling, an all-aluminium crankcase, a four-valve-per-cylinder design with variable camshaft adjustment, plus alternator management and the ECO start/stop system.
The GL63 AMG is mated to a seven-speed AMG Speedshift Plus 7G Tronic transmission that has three modes namely, “Controlled Efficiency” (C) mode where the ECO start/stop function is active, Sport (S) and Manual (M) modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting.
The GL63 AMG boasts of lot of cool features of modern era like a 4matic feature that is basically a four wheel drive, AMG ride control, active curve control, active roll stabilisation and the airmatic sports suspension program. Damping and suspension adapt automatically to the driving surface with three familiar suspension modes, “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport plus”, available at the touch of a button. Also fitted is the 4ETS electronic traction control system.
Thought the GL63 AMG is a seven seater SUV, Merc has not given away the AMG characteristic. All seven seats in the SUV are covered in high-quality leather, electrically adjustable AMG sports seats with AMG badging, an AMG Performance four-spoke steering wheel and the AMG instrument cluster with central colour TFT monitor.
The GL63 AMG has just been revealed which means we wont see a launch anytime soon until 2013 and with the GL63 AMG, Mercedes has a complete lineup without any gaps in the models among each segments.
