Yamaha which made its foray into the premium motorcycle segment with Yamaha R15 in 2008, now plans to get 250cc machines to Indian market soon. Yamaha has always contemplated getting a 250cc motorcycle, but was not sure if the market was mature enough for larger CC bikes. After observing the 250cc segment they would definitely want to introduce some tough competition into it.
So far Yamaha has only revealed that it plans to make the bike 100% localised in order to offer the bike at a very competitive price. However, the model that will be launched nor the time frame is confirmed so far. Yamaha said that they have studied the 250cc segment closely. There observation was that couple of bikes on offer are not 100% localised and owners of these bikes are not fully satisfied with the products. Hence, Yamaha plans to come out with a very competitive 250cc bike in India.
Yamaha has couple of options if it wants to take the advantage of being the first few in the market. Yamaha can always consider upgrading the engines of the Yamaha R15, FZ and Fazer to 250cc. Considering they are already localised completely. International Yamaha Fazer 250 is also a option, but its engine gives a power output of 21bhp@7500rpm and Maximum Torque 20.5Nm@6500rpm. Looking at the competition, Yamaha will definitely have to offer a 25bhp+ bike in order to remain competitive in segment. With cut throat pricing of KTM Duke and the CBR250R, Yamaha will be forced to up its ante.
