Maruti Suzuki Wagon R goes the diesel way

With the rise in demand for diesel cars in India, automakers are now targeting at diesel engines to increase their sales numbers. The shift in trend in the auto sector currently is towards small diesel engines which the automakers are very keen to explore in turn increasing their market share. After Chevrolet the next automaker in line to launch a small diesel hatchback is Maruti Suzuki, its tall hatch Wagon R.

Maruti has two of its small cars Ritz and Swift already in diesel, both being trump cards for Maruti unlike their petrol variants has made Maruti to take the cheaper Wagon R into the diesel department.After Chevrolet tasted success with Beat’s small 1L 3-cylinder TCDI diesel engine, Maruti has decided to give the Wagon R a new diesel engine. Maruti may get a new engine outsourced from Fiat or will tweak the 1.3L 4-cylunder Multijet engine to a 1L 3-cylinder engine churning out 60bhp.

Exact details on the car and its launch are yet to be announced while we expect the Wagon R diesel to be priced Rs.80,000 higher than the petrol variant which starts at Rs.4.20 Lakhs(Ex-Showroom,Delhi).
